Abstract

The biggest change in higher education in its 800 years has been the invention of the research university, which added evidence to faith and reason as a basis for certifying knowledge. The research university is a far more complex institution than the medieval university, and it has been in place in Germany for approximately 150 years. (Trow, 1996, p. 24)
