Abstract

The first approach involves small, unstructured groups in which participants learn through their own internal actions and from the dynamics of the group. This began to develop in 1946 in Connecticut, where a seminar sponsored by the Connecticut Interracial Commission and the Group Dynamics Research Center then operating at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was held. The team participating in this seminar included Kurt Lewin, Kenneth Benne, Leland Bradfore, and Ronald Lippit. This project led to a session in the summer of 1947 in Bethel, Maine. The work that summer culminated in the formation of the National Training Laboratories for Group Development and T-Group Training. However, it was difficult to adapt the personal skills acquired in the T-group to complex organizations.
