TEACHING-RESEARCH AND ADMINISTRATION

Abstract
With the intention of contributing to the understanding of the issues related to research work at the IPN, this paper will briefly present three of the most important aspects. The first refers to the separation that has arisen between teaching and research activities, despite the fact that the latter should be considered integral parts of academic work. Historically, the circumstances faced by educational institutions, forced to meet a growing demand for studies by presenting their offerings under the conditions established by society itself, led them to neglect the other area of academic work, that is, research, which, by its very nature and characteristics, requires time for observation and periods of maturation that make it incompatible with the urgency of teaching.
The second aspect to mention relates to the research model existing at the Institute, and arguably even in the country, at least in terms of the official definition of mechanisms for promoting and supporting activities of this nature. In this regard, the policies defined at the institutional level will be briefly outlined, reflecting the support received for research projects in the area of Administration, in terms of resource allocation and recognition.
Finally, the main characteristics of research administration at the National Polytechnic Institute are described, the progress made in this area in recent years is acknowledged, and the processes are outlined, emphasizing the desirability of strengthening certain actions that should lead to the consolidation of research activities. Among these proposals, the decentralization of the initial stages of the design, review, and approval process for programs and projects, with the corresponding allocation of resources, is highlighted, while maintaining a centralized supervisory function to examine and evaluate the results and use of resources.
